The Future We Don't Want to Know About
Journal article. MONU magazine. 2019.
The article is a contribution to the MONU issue Late Life Urbanism. It explores how our so-called purpose build care homes and their organisational structures might be experienced by its presumed residents. Starting off with fictional scenarios modelled on likely everyday occurrences, the article asks how our templates for care homes and their covert or overt structures and power relationships might play out on an everyday basis. It asks from which perspective common care home typologies are developed and how this might affect everyday needs and desires, such as Later Lie Romance, unusual habits. Which constructs has our society created about Later Life? And, have we collectively created a Future that we all desire but at the same time dread? The discussion then breaks into research and research-by-desgin projects developed with International Master in Architecture Students at KU Leuven, campus Sint_Luca, in an effort to formulate creative alternatives for the status quo.
